CORTIS speaking English for 8 minutes straight

About this practice session

This page turns the YouTube video “CORTIS speaking English for 8 minutes straight ” into an English shadowing exercise. The recording is split into 230 short sentences that you can play one at a time, repeat after the speaker and record your own version for automatic pronunciation scoring.

The speaker talks at about 191 words per minute, a fast pace, with an average of 6.4 words per sentence. That makes it best for advanced learners; slow the playback down or loop each sentence at first.

How to practise with this video

  1. Play the first sentence and listen while reading the transcript. Notice the stress, the pauses and where the intonation rises or falls.
  2. Replay it and speak along with the speaker, copying the rhythm rather than reading word by word.
  3. Record yourself straight after the original. ShadowEcho scores each word for accuracy, fluency and completeness.
  4. Compare your recording with the original, retry the words marked in red, then move on to the next sentence.
  5. Practise 10–15 minutes a day. Coming back to the same video after a few days is an easy way to measure progress.

  110. Malibu beach like
  111. >> we met a lot of great people writers and
  112. producers the session that we made go
  113. worked with Johnny Goldstein such a
  114. great producer
  115. >> that came from a very organic space
  116. >> and like everybody was like crazy in the
  117. studio so
  118. >> yeah this session was crazy
  119. >> one of the we just like to have fun
  120. doing music and like anything like craft
  121. Like it it could be videos, it could be
  122. like photography.
  123. >> Your job is to be creative.
  124. >> Like not just music,
  125. >> anything.

  152. really like to listen to some peaceful
  153. music. I recently bought a vinyl of Chad
  154. Baker and Chad Baker scene. That was
  155. >> I bought it too.
  156. >> It was crazy.
  157. >> My guy. [laughter]
  158. >> What about you, man?
  159. >> Yeah, I think um not just music. I think
  160. for me like going to like new cities is
  161. like the most um inspiration to me.

  163. music video.
  164. >> Talk about you, bro.
  165. >> I grew up listening to a lot of rock
  166. music. So my dad used to play me like
  167. Elliot Smith. Um I don't know like so
  168. many artists like Damon Pala sometime it
  169. was like Foo Fighters like I kind of
  170. like Memphis music a lot of funk and
  171. like a lot of Memphis so like Freddy
  172. Dread all those like you know funk
  173. artists. Korea is a great place to you
  174. know like maybe start a franchise.
  175. >> There are like great great adults who
  176. can just help us give us great advice.
  177. Our some names are seniors like BTS and
  178. TXT they all they all gave us great
  179. advice. It's really a big family and
  180. like they really opened and paved the
  181. way for us so we can like really fool
  182. around and have fun with our music and
  183. like
  184. >> especially um JH Hope Senim and um
  185. Junguk Senim did like the challenge for
  186. both of the songs.
  187. >> It's crazy.
  188. >> I mean it's it's such an honor and such
  189. a blessing to see them do the challenge.
  190. It is a capture of our um lifestyle and
  191. a capture of our um ourselves. We like
  192. treat our music like a diary and a like
  193. journal.
  194. >> So like we have five songs and it sounds
