How Shadowing Works
What is shadowing?
Shadowing is a technique where you listen to a native speaker and repeat what they say as closely as possible, copying sounds, rhythm, stress and intonation. It was popularised by interpreter trainers and polyglots, and it is used because it trains your mouth and ear together. Rather than translating in your head, you learn to produce language the way it actually sounds.
Step by step with ShadowEcho
1. Pick a video. Paste a YouTube link that has subtitles in the language you are learning. Choose something short and clear at first, such as a two to five minute talk or a slow-paced vlog.
2. Listen to one segment. Each subtitle line becomes a segment. Play it once or twice while reading the text, and notice where the speaker pauses, which words are stressed and how the sentence rises or falls.
3. Record yourself. Press record and say the sentence immediately after the original, imitating the speaker rather than reading it flatly. Do not worry about being perfect.
4. Review the feedback. ShadowEcho scores your pronunciation word by word, so you can see which sounds were off. Replay the original and your own recording back to back to hear the difference.
5. Repeat and move on. Retry a segment until you are comfortable, then continue. Short daily sessions of ten to fifteen minutes work better than one long weekly session.
Tips for better results
Use a quiet room and a decent microphone, since background noise lowers the accuracy of scoring. Start with slower speech and increase the difficulty gradually. Focus on rhythm and stress before individual sounds; getting the melody of a sentence right often fixes many small errors at once. Practise with topics you care about so that the vocabulary stays memorable.
How scoring works
Your recording is sent to Microsoft Azure Speech, which compares what you said with the expected text and returns accuracy, fluency and completeness scores for the sentence and for each word. The scores are a guide, not a verdict: accents are normal, and the goal is to be clearly understood and to sound more natural over time.
